Bombs Away: ISIS Threats Inflated by Media

Bombs Away: ISIS Threats Inflated by Media
If you watch news, there’s a good chance you know about ISIS. But who is this Syrian based organization, and what can the United States do to stop them or, at least, prevent them from being a threat to America? ISIS started as an al-Qaeda break-off group in 2006 but has transformed into an estimated two billion dollar organization.ISIS is most widely known for its recorded executions of American journalist James Foley and American-Israeli journalist Steven Sotloff. In addition, ISIS has begun recruiting members throughout the world, including in the United Kingdom and the United States.America has started bombing ISIS in Syria, but this is not the best solution.I believe that the United States, instead of staying with a bombing approach, must send ground troops into Syria to clear out ISIS.In an interview, social studies teacher Kevin Shertzer advised against bombing ISIS. Shertzer expressed how bombs can cause an increased amount of collateral damage. “Bombs are messy; they’re not clean.” Innocent civilians may be in the direct line of fire.If the United States sends ground troops, the attack will be more precise and more effective, causing almost no damage to innocent Syrian civilians.Regarding the civilians, Shertzer referred to it as a “lose-lose situation.”If America doesn’t step in, the Syrians are terrorized by ISIS. If America continues bombing, we run the risk of killing many innocent Syrian civilians.Another big concern is the media’s role in the so-called ‘crisis’.In the same interview, Shertzer brought up the point that the big news stations “sensationalize news”. They want to get a stir out of the public, while risking accuracy. The media’s goal is to simply achieve the best ratings and will dramatize coverage in order to do so. If the media covers this issue in a more rational way, American citizens may not feel as afraid. The networks dramatize it for better ratings by making the stories seem as dramatic as possible. For example the Wall Street Journal chose to conduct an interview with a female Kurdish militant, knowing that interviewing a female soldier would make for a more entertaining story compared to an interview with an ‘expert’. In this interview, the female Kurdish militant explained of the belief that ISIS soldiers are afraid of fighting women.According to the female soldier, “the Jihadists don’t like fighting women, because if they’re killed by a female, they think they won’t go to heaven.” This makes for a entertaining news story that lures people to watch but does not effectively and accurately portray the real issue to the public. If the news stations keep bombing us, the viewers, with sensationalized stories to earn the best ratings possible, and the United States continues to just bomb ISIS in Syria, the crisis in Syria will progressively worsen as ISIS gains more and more power. The United States and its allies must take definitive action. With its supporting allies, the U.S. must send in troops to efficiently wipe out ISIS.Waiting to take this decisive invasive action only makes the issue more severe and makes invading later even more difficult. The time is now for the U.S. to take control.
