Unnecessary Sequels

Unnecessary+Sequels

To kill a god. To bring an empire to its knees. To besmirch the name of a legend. To create an unnecessary sequel. Synonymous. While some who attempt to leap from the success of a blockbuster into the nirvana of a franchise – like Mohammed from the rock land successfully, others plummet into the ruins of what was once an oasis and are forever spurned from Hollywood’s ‘Garden of Eden’.

These monstrosities can give even the best classic movies a bad name. The following are a few sequels that make us wish not only that the movie had never been made, but also that we hadn’t either. Viewer discretion advised. “Jaws 2”: Being the sequel to a blockbuster classic is hard enough, and “Jaws 2” can’t manage to recreate the terror of the original. “Jaws 2” takes place in Amity and features Roy Scheider, who reluctantly returned as Chief Brody, but mostly rehashes the plot of “Jaws” with similar suspense effects.

“Hangover II”: While “The Hangover” was a funny and original movie, this attempt to capitalize on its success and grow a franchise felt like watching a cruel rerun of the first. “The Hangover Part II” is missing the element of surprise as it at- tempts to ride on the success of old jokes. 229751id1_HO2_27x40_1Sheet_0410.indd “Happy Feet 2”: Following what is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most original animated films, “Happy Feet.” This film struggles to match the wit and creativity of its prequel. “Happy Feet 2”, though beautifully animated, is confused in terms of its plot. Strangely, it also features Matt Damon and Brad Pitt as krill (microscopic undersea organisms). “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”: The fourth installment in the Indiana Jones franchise, this long awaited sequel couldn’t live up to the expectations. While the movie has its fun moments, the plot is lacking and repetitive. Shia LeBeouf, the film’s costar, admitted to “dropping the ball” on the Indiana Jones legacy.
