Volunteers Needed for Bike Camp for kids and adults with Disabilities

I am asking your help, and hope you will consider routing this request to your email list of those who are capable of a brisk jog, run and sprint and might have time to volunteer as a spotter for our June 9 – 13 Bike Camp for individuals with disabilities (children and adults). Please call me to discuss this great heart and “soul” opportunity!

The Down Syndrome Association of Santa Barbara County hosts their 4th “iCAN Bike” specialized (adapted needs) bike camp that teaches kids with disabilities how to ride regular bikes over the course of five-days, at the Page Youth Center. “iCAN BIke” , formerly known as “Lose the Training Wheels” is amazing – Here is a short video clip of the program : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-QKC00Jppo

Attached is the volunteer registration form that explains the need for June 9 – 13. They are looking for 45 “spotters” per day for 75 minute shifts that repeat at the same time each day. They could also accommodate a volunteer coming one day only, and working one or multiple shifts in that one day.

Volunteers are needed to work as spotters/runners to jog alongside our new riders, for their 75 minute sessions. Some riders need two spotters, on each side of their bike.

We ask your help to get the word out to help with our recruitment goal of 45 spotters per day. It is ideal to have each spotter work the same session each day of week, with an assigned rider, but sometimes this is not possible. Days off can be arranged and substitute runners recruited to fill in. SO, spotters are welcomed any days they can make it!

Note: Spotters generally walk fast or comfortably jog on the first day, and build to a jog/run/ sprint/sweat as their rider and the week progresses. We need enough runners to give our spotters a break during each and every session! GREAT Work Out folks – AND so good for your soul! See Salina’s Story attached below.

Ideally, sign up for the same session each day to motivate and teach a child to ride. There are 8 riders signed up per session. 10 – 12 volunteers needed per session to provide needed breaks, cover an absent volunteer and/or flank a rider that needs extra help.

Here is our session Schedule Monday – Friday:

Session 1: 9:30 AM – 10:45 AM
Session 2: 11:05 AM – 12:20 PM
Session 3: 12:50 PM – 2:05 PM
Session 4: 2:25 PM – 3:40 PM
